What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu translates to "the gentle art", it is referred to as such because the art utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength. Also the finishing submissions are viewed as a more humane alternative to
striking. Jiu Jitsu originated in Japan. However, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu developed and evolved in the city of Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil where the Gracie family learned, tweaked and produced a very practical ground fighting
technique. Grandmaster Carlos Gracie, founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, learned traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu
from Mitsue Maeda- a Japanese Jiu Jitsu champion living in Brazil. Carlos and his family were small in stature and transformed Jiu Jitsu into a martial art that could be effective when fighting larger opponents. Thus, the guard was developed which distinguishes BJJ from the Japanese form. The guard is using your legs as defense. Moreover, when you defend yourself using your legs, in any variation, while on the mat or ground, you are using your guard. While matching overall strength with a larger adversary may seem defeating, using your guard can equalize the attack and, often times, give you the advantage due to the strength you have in your hips and legs. With this said, BJJ proves to be the most effective martial art even among smaller stature practitioners including women.
